Outdoor education at the Advent Home Learning Center combines work, recreation and service. It teaches redemptive discipline, and is designed to help in the harmonious development of each student.
* Work Education Program
Advent Home conducts a work education program for students to develop vocational awareness, work skills, values and a positive attitude. Students participate in gardening, building and equipment maintenance, lawn care, food preparation and service. An academic grade is given. Recreation and work are therapeutic. They both tone muscles, stimulate the blood, activate the mind, reduce stress, improve the digestive process, and strengthen and heal the body.
* Recreation
Working, training, and playing outdoors in the sunshine and fresh air, have a therapeutic effect, reducing depression and anxiety and improving overall well-being. Recreation involves the students in outdoor activities that teach teamwork and other social skills.Recreation offers the students a chance to experience challenging activities, to learn about themselves and acquire leadership skills. They spend time hiking, playing and socializing. Finally, recreation involves spiritual activities such as worship, meditation and reflection.
* Community Outreach
Service and witnessing to others creates an opportunity for the students to assist their community. Over the past few years Advent Home students have been involved in work bees, community service projects, mission trips, spiritual programs and many other humanitarian activities.Currently, students are involved in Advent Home's new wellness program, Healthier You, in which they share healthy lifestyle choices with the local community through literature, seminars and Health Expos.
