“Jay,* have you done the dishes?” “Uh…almost, Mom,” Jay responded from behind his computer screen. “I was just finishing this game…I’ll do them now, I promise.” Jay’s single mom sighed in frustration. She knew Jay meant well, but why couldn’t he focus on a simple task? Holding down two jobs was hard enough, without spending all her free time nagging him to do his homework, wash the dishes, pick up his clothes… Jay was just as erratic at school. He impulsively started assignments without listening to the teacher’s instructions, then desk-hopped around the classroom, distracting others with unrelated questions. Yet, ask him to explain his favorite computer game and he’d amaze you with his knowledge! Diagnosed with ADHD at 9, Jay fidgeted his way through his formative years. When school officials pressured his mom to find somewhere else to educate her son, she surfed the Internet for alternatives. This led her to www.adventhome.org. She loved the holistic concepts of Maturation Therapy®, and enrolled Jay as soon as she could. At first, Jay missed junk food, but gradually adapted to the low-sugar, low-stimulant vegetarian diet. Working outdoors provided a good channel for his hyperactive energies, and a structured daily schedule helped him stay on task. Jay also began to enjoy school, as the smaller classes afforded him more personal academic attention. His mother noticed he was not quite as impulsive, and was more reliable with his tasks.
