Dear Dr. Senior, My little Donny was such a sweet kid while growing up. He was obedient to me, respectful to his father and kind to his baby sister. Unknown to Donny, a conflict was brewing between his father and me. My husband’s family was wealthy, but my parents were poor. Our different values led to fights, and eventually, separation and divorce. At 13, when Donny discovered that his dad was leaving, he reacted negatively, wetting his bed and not sleeping at night. He acted very depressed, so we put him on medication. In his anguish, he became defiant, cursing and threatening me and bullying his sister. I sent him to live with his grandparents, who were unable to handle him. He took advantage of their age and kindness, shoplifting CD’s and electronic games, and then lying to cover his behavior. Finally, I brought him back home. He began displaying symptoms of ADHD, and his school performance declined until he failed the seventh grade. He got into fights, started cutting classes, and experimented with smoking. Mimicking badly behaved peers resulted in him growing long hair and wearing gothic clothes. These drastic changes frightened me. Donny recently turned 14. My pediatrician says to get help immediately, before his behavior becomes worse. He recommends sending Donny to Advent Home, but I just can’t— I would feel like a failure... | ||||
